How often do you question your vehicles maintenance and brush off your tires? Simply disregard their quality , upkeep or lifespan? I’d hope to think not at all and that the quality of your tires matters just as much as refreshing the oil or filters in your vehicle. Well, maybe now I have you second guessing your commitment to your tires? GOOD! Tires are as important, if not more than the maintenance of the rest of your vehicle. They affect everything about how the rest of your vehicle runs. And not to mention if the tread is quite worn, you could be risking a lot when it comes to collisions and bad driving conditions.
Checking Your Tire Pressure
HOW COMMON IS IMPROPER TIRE INFLATION?
A study conducted in early 2003, 2005 and still in 2007 found that more than two thirds of cars in Canada have at least one tire that is either under or over-inflated. One third of all vehicles had three or four tires that were improperly inflated. This represents a safety risk to Canadian motorists, as well as significant expenses in fuel and tire replacement costs. The resulting increase in fuel consumption means that more greenhouse gases, which contribute to climate change, and other harmful emissions are unnecessarily released into the environment.

You may be asking yourself, well I don’t know what all that information means?! Worry no further…

In the diagram where it is marks MAX. COLD INFLATION it reads 35PSI( Pounds per Square Inch). This is the maximum for the tires. This should not be used as your guide to to proper tire pressure for your vehicle as it varies from vehicle to vehicle. You can find the correct PSI on the inside of the drivers door or on your vehicle place card.
Measuring Your Tire Pressure
You will need a Tire Pressure Gauge to complete these steps.
- Find the proper PSI amount as stated above.
- Only measure your pressure if your tires are cold. Tires are cold if they have not been driven for more than 2 km or haven’t moved for at least 3 hours.
- Complete tire inflation check: Remove the cap from the tire valve, press tire gauge onto valve and take the reading from the gauge.
- If needed add air to correct air pressure. Always check it with the gauge after to make sure it is at the correct amount. If you’ve added too much, push the metal stem to release air and re-check.
- Replace the valve cap and repeat with each tire.
Proper tire inflation saves gas and extends the life of a tire. Properly inflated tires generate less heat or friction with the road and increase fuel economy. So make sure to do your monthly pressure checks for ultimate fuel efficiency!
